As the 2026 “Banking and Financial Firm of the Year,” Riker Danzig was featured in the New Jersey Law Journal’s Q&A article, highlighting the Firm’s work for financial institution clients in 2025. Co-Chair Anthony J. Borrelli, Managing Partner Michael P. O’Mullan and Executive Committee member Joseph L. Schwartz provided answers for the article.
In answer to what single ingredient matters most in a successful banking and financial practice, we noted “institutional knowledge.” The Firm has served financial institutions since 1882, and that experience runs through our securities, banking, bankruptcy, real estate and regulatory teams. “Technical skill is the price of entry; knowing the industry is what sets us apart,” we said. We noted that "Our securities team, for example, includes five former in-house counsel; we know our clients’ businesses, the industry rules and regulations in which they operate, and their practices, policies, and procedures."
Looking ahead, our team identified four trends in banking and finance: the growing number of disputes among creditors of the same distressed company; growing competition for talent in financial institutions as firms recruit entire teams, with litigation expected over raiding and retention agreements; the growing overlap between banks and private credit; and a currently calm regulatory environment that could tighten, with more litigation to follow, if the “AI bubble” bursts or the market corrects.
The article referenced some of our notable matters, including:
- representing BNYM as indenture trustee in EchoStar Corp.’s default;
- protecting Provident Bank’s roughly $110 million in secured claims in its borrowers’ Chapter 11 cases in Texas;
- obtaining judgments on a default of more than $20 million for Manasquan Bank and liquidating collateral through a receiver and UCC sales; and
- pursuing more than $335 million in claims for U.S. Bank, as Trustee and Collateral Agent, in the Invitae Corp. Chapter 11 cases in New Jersey;
- investigating and responding to more than 2,500 pre-litigation investor complaints for financial institution clients.
