Maura C. Smith is a Partner in Riker Danzig’s Insurance and Reinsurance Group, with particular expertise in insurance litigation.
Maura regularly represents insurance company clients in complex coverage matters, bad faith litigation, and reinsurance arbitrations. She also has significant experience providing insurance regulatory advice to clients, serving as investigation counsel for clients subject to government inquiries, and managing and serving as defense counsel retained by insurer clients in a variety of actions, including complex products liability disputes.
Maura earned her undergraduate degree, cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. She earned her J.D., magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, in 2006 from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She then served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Michael M. Baylson, United States District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Maura began her career as a litigation associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, where she represented clients in complex commercial litigation, including securities class actions and shareholder derivative litigation. Maura practiced with Riker Danzig from 2011 to 2014, before serving as in-house coverage counsel for Mitsui Sumitomo Marine Management, where she provided coverage advice on claims under all insurance lines, including commercial liability, property, automobile, ocean marine, and workers’ compensation, in addition to assisting with policy drafting. Maura returned to Riker Danzig in 2016.
