Law360 Announces Riker Danzig’s Cannabis Law Practice

April 18, 2018

Riker Danzig partners Jason Navarino and Zahid Quraishi were quoted in the March 5, 2018  Law360 article, “Riker Danzig, Cole Schotz Launch NJ Cannabis Practices.”  The article announces the Firm’s Cannabis Law Group following Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order regarding medical marijuana reforms and proposed legislation.  The article notes, “Riker’s multidisciplinary approach is consistent with the firm’s general philosophy.”

Zahid explains the Firm’s white collar attorneys in the group will be focusing on the proposed state law’s interplay with the Controlled Substances Act.  Zahid says, “No state act of legalization by itself can override this federal criminal statute.”  Jason notes that in addition to the federal criminal restrictions relating to marijuana, cannabis businesses are “like all other businesses and investors in many respects.” Jason said, “They have to comply with state corporate laws and federal securities laws, and they want to be structured in a tax-efficient way.”

The group is comprised of five partners, from three different relevant practice areas of law: Jason Navarino and Robert Frucht, Corporate and Tax; Samuel Moulthrop and Zahid Quraishi, White Collar Criminal Defense and Investigations; and Mary Kay Roberts, Governmental Affairs.
