Partner Stuart M. Lederman was quoted by the New Jersey Law Journal in its story “2023 Won't Be Easy for New Jersey Litigators as Trial Courts Get Back on Their Feet,” published on December 14, 2022.
In the article Stuart, who practices in the Firm’s Litigation, Governmental Affairs, Eminent Domain and Construction Law Practices, commented that civil trials will likely not be prevalent in the first half of 2023. “Civil litigators can still face a long wait before getting a trial date,” Stuart said. “I believe the court system is going to spend at least the first half of the year addressing the backlog of criminal and landlord-tenant [cases], which means what I’ll call pure civil, commercial trials are not going to be moving . . . .”
Stuart also commented on the changes for law firms when it comes to training and managing associates, calling it an “exciting time.” He pointed to the complexity of maintaining firm culture when staff and associates are working remotely, noting that working remotely helps some of them to balance their professional and family obligations.
“It’s an exciting time to be in the practice,” he said. “The pandemic forced some large changes very quickly and I think it’s an exciting time to figure out how to manage differently, to engage with associates differently.” He noted the differences in reading people, even judges, on Zoom rather than in person, and said, “It’s a great opportunity, and that’s what keeps everybody fresh. It’s invigorating. This has forced us all to be open to new ideas.”
