Wendi explains in the article that a design patent protects how an invention looks, or the ornamental design, as opposed to a utility patent, which protects how an invention works. She addresses how design patents are a valuable tool for preventing or stopping competitors or knockoffs, and should be used more for protection by small to mid-size companies.
