Brooks H. Leonard

Bio

Brooks H. Leonard is Counsel in the Firm’s Insurance Group, where he focuses his practice exclusively on insurance coverage matters.  Brooks represents insurance carriers in a wide variety of litigated and non-litigated matters mainly in New York and New Jersey.  He advises clients on coverage issues concerning primary and excess commercial liability and property policies and has experience with bad-faith and extra-contractual matters as well.

Brooks is also part of a pro bono team at Riker Danzig that has assisted several Indonesian Christian families living in Central New Jersey to re-open their asylum cases, which led to the Firm receiving a Legal Leadership Award in 2019 from the ACLU of New Jersey.

Since 2018, Brooks has proudly served as a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Civil Practice Committee, which is responsible for making recommendations and amendments to Parts I, II, and IV of the New Jersey Court Rules.

Best Lawyers in America®, a peer review of U.S. lawyers, has included Brooks on its “Ones to Watch” list in the field of Insurance Law for 2022 and 2021. The “Ones to Watch” awards are recognitions given to attorneys who are earlier in their careers for outstanding professional excellence in private practice in the United States.  Brooks has been included on the Super Lawyers “Rising Star” list by Thomson Reuters in the area of Insurance Coverage every year from 2014 through 2021.  See Awards and Honors Methodology.

Prior to joining Riker Danzig, he was an associate with the former Coughlin Duffy law firm.

Brooks received his J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Seton Hall University School of Law in 2010, where he was Articles Editor of the Seton Hall Law Review. Brooks earned his B.A., in Biology and Romance Languages, from the University of North Carolina in 2003. After law school, he was a law clerk to the Honorable Mary Catherine Cuff, P.J.A.D., Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division, from 2010-2011.
